Dunbar, renowned for its long hours of sunshine, is steeped in history and The Rocks overlooks the ruins of the famous Dunbar Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in 1567.

Dunbar is well served by both road and rail, and with many natural amenities, it is an ideal resort, with its rugged coastline and dramatic Lammermuir Hills.

There are two golf courses in Dunbar, one of Championship level, and many more only a short drive away, including Muirfield in Gullane.

New all weather tennis courts are situated behind the hotel in Winterfield Park, and looking in the other direction the Dunbar Leisure Centre sits proudly beside the Castle ruins. The Centre houses a family swimming pool with flume and wave machine, as well as sports hall and gym with sauna and steam room.

Also in the town there are various museums that tell the story of Dunbar’s part in the wars between Scotland and England, and you can also visit the birthplace of John Muir – founder of America’s National Park system – who was born in a house on Dunbar’s High Street. Other activities could include a tour around Belhaven Brewery, one of Scotland’s oldest breweries or an afternoon at East Links Family Park where you’ll find llamas, sheep and other friendly animals.

Around Dunbar you are certain to find activities to interest you, a twenty minute train journey and you can find yourself in Edinburgh, or the National Seabird Centre in North Berwick is a good way to find out more before a trip to the Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth, home to hundreds of seabirds. Going south takes you to the picturesque hamlet of Cove and on to Cockburnspath – the finishing point of the Southern Upland Way.
